A witness during a right to abortion the audience expertly rebuffed an incendiary question from the senator. John Kennedy (R-La.) Wednesday. (Watch the video below.)
At a Senate subcommittee hearing focused on interstate travel for abortions as more and more states are restricting During the proceedings, Kennedy mentioned a woman who allegedly sought an abortion during her 34th week of pregnancy.
“At this point, should the mother have the right – a clearly viable child – to abort? Kennedy asked a witness, who said he didn’t want to speculate.
“That’s what your side always says,” Kennedy sneered. “My example is not unrealistic. I want to save time. If your answer is, “That never happens,” let me turn to Ms. Frye. What do you think?”
Jocelyn Frye, president of the National Partnership for Women and Families, gave Kennedy a forceful response by refusing to give in to the right’s fearmongering about extremely late procedures.
“First of all, don’t ask a question if you don’t want to know the answer,” Frye said. “But I tell you, senator, 1%, 1% of abortions occur at 21 weeks or later. So I think the premise of your question starts an unfair debate about abortion. It’s – it’s rarely the case. The vast majority of pregnancies and abortions considered late term are linked to serious and devastating medical circumstances.
She wasn’t finished.
“And I understand your point, senator. I understand your point of view. But with all due respect, I also think the chances of people going through a pregnancy and just saying, ‘I don’t want it,’ is disrespectful to women,” she added.
Frye’s response was seconded by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (DR.I.), who chaired the meeting. He shared the exchange on Ms. Frye’s response says it all.
During my hearing on the freedom to travel for an abortion, Senator Kennedy asked our witnesses to respond to a sensational and highly unrealistic hypothetical intended to stoke fear.
