Rory McIlroy faces a showdown on Sunday against Patrick Cantlay as the two men look to chase down Bryson DeChambeau in the final round of the 124th US Open at Pinehurst No. 2.
McIlroy will play alongside Cantlay at 7.10pm BST, the first time they have been grouped together since a heated exchange with Cantlay’s caddy Joe LaCava at last September’s Ryder Cup in Rome.
The Northern Irishman had resented LaCava’s celebrations after Cantlay holed a long putt on the 18th green, the argument continued later when McIlroy had to be restrained by teammate Shane Lowry in the car park.
“Yeah, it should be great,” Cantlay said of the McIlroy duo after a third-round 70. “I’m in a great position. It’s a golf course that’s challenging. If you can make a few birdies, you can win a lot ever on the course. I’m really happy with the way I played today today and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
Sky Sports will show extensive coverage of all the final round action live on Sunday from 2pm on Sky Sports Golf, with DeChambeau taking a three-shot lead into the final day and playing alongside Matthieu Pavon in the final group at 7:21 p.m. BST.
