World number one Scottie Scheffler has vowed not to overreact after recording his worst result of the season at the 124th US Open.
The two-time Masters champion went into the third major of the year as the pre-tournament favorite, after winning the memorial tournament on Sunday to record a fifth PGA Tour victory in eight starts, only to then fail to challenge for a second major victory of the season.
Scheffler made it just halfway through five overs and recorded just four birdies in a frustrating week, finishing with eight overs to post his worst finish since a tie for 45th at the CJ Cup in October 2022 .
“It’s been a long week. Obviously I didn’t play my best,” Scheffler said. “I couldn’t hole anything. I couldn’t see the break on those greens. The greens this week kind of had my number. I felt like I made a lot of really good putts that did weird things to the cut which I was not expecting them to do.
“When we come back here in a few years (Pinehurst will host the U.S. Open again in 2029), I’ll probably try to do a lot more work to get things done on the greens.
“But I played golf for a good amount of time. I had a tough event after a big event. I’m not really going to look into it any further.”
Could Scheffler change his major approach?
Scheffler had already won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players, the Masters and the RBC Heritage this year before his one-stroke victory at Muirfield Village, although he admits a week of fatigue at the Memorial may have been a factor in his performance at the US Open.
“Last week, with the golf course the way it is, it probably wasn’t the best prep work for me before another really tough event,” Scheffler said. “I shot five under in the first round at Memorial, which would have been the easiest day, and I was three under from there.
“I mean, it’s pretty similar to the US Open, and playing that many rounds, especially with what I’ve been dealing with in the weeks leading up to or kind of the whole season, playing really a lot good golf and being in contention, I think my preparation might have been a little better for this week if I was at home.
“I’m obviously not going to skip the Jack (Nicklaus) tournament. It’s a tournament that I love playing. It’s a tournament that I’m honored to be the champion of, but as far as preparing for this week, it may not have been the best.
“I knew what my schedule was at the start of the year. I had set it. It has always been like that. I want to move forward, perhaps I will do things a little differently in the weeks coming up at the majors, especially when we know it’s going to be a difficult setup at the US Open.”
And after?
Scheffler is back in action at the Travelers Championship, the latest of the PGA Tour’s flagship events, with live coverage on Thursday from 12:30 p.m. via the Red Button and 5 p.m. on Sky Sports Golf.
The final men’s major of the year is The Open, which will take place at Royal Troon from July 18-21, where Scheffler will once again be among the pre-tournament favorites. Stream the PGA Tour, majors and more with NOW.
