Efforts to replace President Biden as the Democratic Party’s 2024 nominee have lost momentum and are essentially “over” following the assassination attempt on former President Trump, the president’s allies say, according to a new report.
A constant flow of Democratic lawmakers Major donors had called on Biden to drop out of the race throughout last week and the weekend. Biden allies now say Trump’s assassination attempt has pulled the rug out from under Biden’s critics.
“I think it’s over,” a person close to the president told NBC News. “We’re losing momentum.”
“They had a really bad political day, and then there was this supernova. Now everything is frozen,” one Democratic strategist told the outlet. “If you’re an advocate for, ‘How do you tell the old man it’s time to go?’ — it’s really hard to have that conversation in public. This event is blocking out the sun right now.”

Biden addressed the nation shortly after Saturday’s assassination attempt, condemning the violence and saying he was praying for Trump and his family.
“I have been informed of the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania,” Biden said in a statement at the time. “I am grateful to hear that he is safe and doing well. I am praying for him and his family and everyone who was at the rally as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. We must come together as a nation to condemn it.”

Biden then spoke on the phone with Trump, but details of their conversation were not released. Biden also spoke with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Butler Mayor Bob Dandoy.
Biden’s campaign The network’s executives responded quickly, canceling plans for ads attacking Trump for the time being. According to NBC News, staffers have been asked to “refrain from any comments on social media or in public.”

“It’s likely that the effort to unseat Biden is over. He’s not going to voluntarily step aside at that point,” another Biden ally told the outlet. “Biden has demonstrated that he’s going to fight.”
The assassination attempt took place two days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Trump will officially be nominated as the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential candidate.

The Democratic National Committee told Fox News it is removing ads it placed Monday on 57 city buses in Milwaukee, the site of the GOP convention.
