Scottie Scheffler shot a 6-under 65 in the first round of the Travelers Championship and wasn’t far from the lead at TPC River Highlands.
Scheffler, seeking his sixth victory this season, credited maintaining a minor swing with getting him back on track after losing contention at the US Open last week.
“I feel like I did well,” Scheffler said after four birdies, an eagle and a bogey on the front 18 on Thursday.
“I found some things in my swing early in the week and I definitely feel like I’m swinging a lot better than last week.”
On his 28th birthday Friday, Scheffler hopes to build on his best first-round score this season by celebrating his 36-hole lead.
But he will be chasing another birthday boy in 21-year-old Tom Kim, who carded a first-round 62 to take first place on the leaderboard.
Already a three-time winner on tour, Kim is looking for his first win at a marquee event.
But no one does it better than Scheffler on the PGA Tour in 2024.
The 11-time Tour winner said he found a grip adjustment this week that helped him get back into rhythm and deliver his first ride in the 60s since the memorial tournament.
His 65 ended a streak of six successive rounds in the 70s.
“It’s a little hard to explain, to be honest with you,” Scheffler said. “But I definitely feel better at the top of my swing, making sure my grip is kind of in the right position.”
Defending champion Keegan Bradley opened with a score of 69-under.
