Yamada Kurumi, a client, works in a brothel to earn enough money to frequent the clubs, which she does about once a week. She has had boyfriends in the past but finds hosts more exciting. She doesn’t know whether to look for an office job after graduating from college or pursue sex work, which pays better. “Many people start to lose touch with their friends once they become addicted to hosting clubs,” says Ms. Yamada. “My host is already part of my daily life… If I find a normal job, I probably won’t be able to see him anymore. That scares me.”
