Earlier this year it was reported that That of Francis Ford Coppola long awaited science fiction film Megalopolis could finally see the light of day. That day appears to be very near, as Coppola’s production company, American Zoetrope, has released the very first footage from the film that gives a sense of its scope.
In the clip, Adam Driver’s Caesar heads to the roof of a New York skyscraper. Absolutely terrified, he finally found the courage to take a step off the ledge, only to nearly plummet to his death before shouting, “It’s time, stop!” Time does indeed stop, as does gravity, it seems, allowing him to get back on his feet and not end up in a pancake. With a snap of his fingers, time resumes once more, and Caesar is amazed at his own power, whatever it may be.
Megalopolis was previously described as a sci-fi love story between Caesar and Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel). Caught between Cesar and his father Frank’s (Giancarlo Esposito) opposing visions for New York, she embarks on a journey to find her own path while the two men still fight for the city. Screenings were held recently for studio executives And some pressand impressions were reportedly mixed across the board: some respected how imaginative and “decidedly crazy” it was, others thought it was all over the place and probably a box office dud.
At the time of writing, Megalopolis does not have a North American distributor…Amazon MGM and Apple both have reportedly expressed interest, but the film is scheduled to premiere in Cannes on May 17. by Coppola proud to be: the film is dedicated to his late wife Eleanor Neil, who died last month, and considers the preview above a “gift from her”.
