E-International Relations invites PhD/PhD students (at any stage) and early career academics (within 5 years of submitting their PhD) to prepare articles describing new or underappreciated ideas that contribute to better understanding of international relations. The prize welcomes papers on the widest range of topics, provided they relate their topic to a global or regional issue – ideally with the aim of sparking debate that will contribute to concrete outcomes. We welcome empirical, political, historical, legal and diplomatic approaches, as well as articles that address theoretical and disciplinary issues in an accessible manner. As the aim of this award is to communicate new ideas to the widest possible audience, applicants should avoid writing in an abstract or jargon-heavy manner. Articles should be concise and written to be of interest to any informed reader, including non-specialists. The criteria we have placed below will help applicants write appropriately for the award.
This year’s prize is a publication on our website and £1,000 in books.
Shortlisted articles will be edited and published on E-International Relations and promoted across all our social media channels to enable the ideas expressed to reach our audience of over 3 million readers. From the shortlisted applicants, one winner will be rewarded and receive reading vouchers worth £1,000 shared between our sponsors at Edinburgh University Press, Political regime, Wise, Bloomsbury And Routledge. The winner will also have 3 months of access to the Sage online service Learning Resources.
Entry Criteria
1) Applicants must be only one author who is registered as a PhD student/candidate (at any stage) or be an early career academic who has completed their PhD within the last 5 years (we can give or take A little here, so don’t worry too much if you’re slightly off that). We do not allow co-authored or group-authored articles for this award.
2) Articles must be between 3,500 and 5,000 words, including references and citations. As references are included in the word count, keep references and citations to a minimum and cite only when directly referencing the essential literature/ideas.
3) You must write about a topic about which you have academic knowledge (due to your own primary research and/or data collection) and do so in a way that allows your ideas to be understood by an audience as well wide as possible.
4) If you are currently volunteering as an Editor (any position) at E-International Relations, you are not eligible to enter this award.
You should format your article as follows
- Prepare your article in Microsoft Word (.docx) format in well-written, well-edited, and publishable English (any variation is suitable).
- Include a biography (20-100 words) that details academic/professional affiliations, titles, positions, and preferred pronouns (if applicable). You can also include notable posts and web/social links.
- Create a catchy title that directly describes the content. It must contain 80 characters or less and Title case.
- Do not indent the first sentences of paragraphs. Leave a line of free space between each paragraph.
- SEO must be done via embedded hyperlinks and/or the Chicago Manual of Style author-date system.
- We do not allow footnotes or endnotes in any form (for reference or otherwise).
- Your article should not exceed 5,000 words, including references and citations.
- Indent quotation marks longer than two lines. Do not italicize quotes.
- Do not use a double space after each period/full stop (only one space please).
- If you used images, figures or tables, compile them at the bottom of your article and number them. If used, these must be an integral part of the content and created/owned by you, or provided with attribution and a destination link to the source confirming that it is in the public domain.
