The San Antonio Spurs’ first-round pick has been ruled out for the remainder of the Las Vegas Summer League with a sprained wrist, the team announced Sunday.
Stephon Castle, the No. 4 overall pick, was injured as he approached to contest a shot with three minutes left in his Summer League opener, an 83-77 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday. Castle’s legs were pulled off by his own teammate, and he landed on his right arm as he fell to the ground.
Castle, 19, remained in the game despite his injury, finishing with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists, but the Spurs are being cautious with their first-round draft pick by keeping him out for further games.
“I feel like they have my best interests at heart,” Castle said of the decision to silence him, according to CBS Sports. “I think it’s wise to err on the side of caution.”
Castle helped UConn win a second straight title last season as a freshman. He averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists for the Huskies before deciding to turn pro.
