Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are still battling for victory at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, with both men just two shots off the lead heading into the final round of the PGA Tour’s two-man team event.
McIlroy and Lowry posted a flawless eight-under 64 in the best-ball format on Saturday to move to 21-under for the tournament and occupy a share of third place at TPC Louisiana.
Patrick Fishburn and Zac Blair lead the field at 23 under after a 12-under day, with the 60 Utah natives just one shot shy of the tournament record of 59 set by Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele at first tour of the 2022 edition.
Luke List and Henrik Norlander are one shot behind Fishburn and Blair at 22 under, with Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard alongside McIlroy and Lowry one shot further back.
McIlroy and Lowry, who shared the lead at 13 under after 36 holes, made seven birdies over their final seven holes Saturday after a slow start.
The alternative format will be Sunday’s final round format, live on Sky Golf sports from 3 p.m.
“Look, it was a tough day,” McIlroy said. “Birdies were a little harder to come by than they were on Thursday in the best-ball format.
“I think today it was about staying patient knowing that the course was going to present opportunities, especially on the back nine.”
McIlroy, a four-time major champion, is making his debut in this tournament after previously rejecting offers from Bubba Watson to be his partner in previous editions.
Leaders Fishburn and Blair, both winless on the PGA Tour, have played golf together since their high school days in Ogden, Utah.
They carded 29 on the front nine, culminating in an eagle at the par-five second, and came home in 31.
Fishburn has made two cuts in nine starts during his rookie season in 2024, while Blair makes his 185th PGA Tour start with his best finish tied for second at the 2023 Travelers Championship.
