Rookie Rece Hinds hit a 458-foot home run and missed a single to complete the cycle in his second career game to propel the Cincinnati Reds past the visiting Colorado Rockies, 12-6, on Tuesday night.
After making his major league debut Monday and hitting a 449-foot home run into the upper deck in left, Hinds hit his second ribbon-sized home run in as many days — a drive into the upper deck in right in a four-run seventh for Cincinnati.
Hinds added a triple and a double and became the first player in MLB history to record five extra-base hits in his first two career games. With a chance to make history and a cycle, Hinds was grounded out to end the eighth.
Tyler Stephenson homered and had three hits, Will Benson hit a three-run homer and Spencer Steer added his 14th for the Reds, who have won all five meetings with the Rockies this season.
Brenton Doyle hit two home runs, including a 442-foot home run off reliever Buck Farmer in the eighth inning. The Rockies fell to 0-2 on their seven-game road trip and 12-33 on the season, the worst such record in the National League.
Cincinnati left-handed starter Nick Lodolo returned from a two-week stint on the injured list with a blister on his left hand and appeared in his groove early, striking out the team in the first frame before a 44-minute rain delay disrupted his rhythm.
Nick Martinez (3-5) allowed one hit and no runs while striking out three in 1 1/3 innings to record the victory in relief.
The Reds did some serious damage before heavy rain fell when they scored five runs in the second inning against Colorado starter and loser Cal Quantrill (6-7).
Stephenson’s solo home run and Benson’s three-run home run highlighted a five-run second inning. Jeimer Candelario hit a ball into the stands in right that was initially ruled a two-run home run that would have given Cincinnati a 7-0 lead but was revised to a foul ball.
After the delay, Hunter Goodman doubled to left-center for Colorado’s first hit off Lodolo, who then hit Ezequiel Tovar with a pitch before Brendan Rodgers flew out to right to end the inning.
Lodolo retired the first two batters of the fourth inning, but the inning quickly fell apart. Doyle hit a solo home run to right-center field, his 12th, and Michael Toglia added a two-run homer, his 11th, to cut Cincinnati’s lead to 5-3.
