President Biden is getting help from Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine as his campaign scrambles to make sure he gets on the ballot in the state.
DeWine called a rare special session of the General Assembly for Tuesday demanding Republican state legislators help pass a bill ensuring Biden appears on this year’s ballot.
Ohio requires each political party to certify its choice of presidential candidates at least 90 days before the election. The Democratic Party is holding an unusually late national convention this year, on August 19, just 75 days before the election.
Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose has repeatedly warned that Biden is on the verge of missing the state’s deadline to file as a candidate because of the gap.

“The legislator had (A) session yesterday and once again, I took no action. This is simply unacceptable,” DeWine said. said Thursday. “Ohio is running out of time to put Joe Biden, the sitting President of the United States, on the ballot this fall. Failure to do so is simply unacceptable. It’s ridiculous, it’s an absurd situation. “
He continued: “The goal of this session will be for the General Assembly to pass legislation ensuring that the two leading presidential candidates will be on Ohio’s ballot in November, as well as legislation that would prohibit spending of foreign nationals.”
DeWine chastised members of his own party for not making a serious effort to put the president on the ballot.
LaRose, a Republican who was running for Senate in 2024 but lost to Bernie Moreno in the GOP primary, says the Democratic Party has yet to propose a solution consistent with current law.
“I said from here in Colorado that it is in the best interest of voters to have a choice in the presidential race. I also have a duty to follow the law as the state’s elections director. ‘Ohio,” LaRose said in a statement. Tuesday.

“As it currently stands, the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee will not appear on the Ohio ballot. It is not my choice. This is due to a conflict of laws created by the party , and the party has so far not proposed any legally acceptable remedy,” he continued.
LaRose said either the state Legislature needs to change the law to allow Biden’s certification or the Democratic Party needs to change its plans. Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens, also a Republican, said lawmakers would not bail out Biden.
