Masters champion Scottie Scheffler took a big step closer to a fourth victory in five starts after moving to the top of the leaderboard with a superb bogey-free third round at the RBC Heritage.
Scheffler made eight birdies in a brilliant flawless 63 at Harbor Town to move to 16 under and boost his hopes of becoming the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win on the PGA Tour the week after winning the green jacket.
The world number 1 enters the final day 16 under and one shot ahead of Austrian Sepp Straka, with double major champion Collin Morikawa a little further back in third ahead of Patrick Rodgers, Sahith Theegala and Ludvig Åberg.
“I think when I’m playing my best, sometimes I feel like I’m competing against myself a little bit, trying to keep pushing and staying as focused as possible,” Scheffler said. “I love competing against these guys and I’m looking forward to the challenge of coming to compete tomorrow.”
Scheffler entered the weekend three shots behind, but quickly rejoined a share of the lead after following three birdies over a four-hole stretch starting at the second by holing a 10-foot holeshot to add another at the par-five seventh.
The nine-time PGA Tour winner drained a 35-footer to birdie the handy ninth and close a front nine 31, before adding to his total at the par-four 11th and hitting range at the par-five 15th.
Scheffler then drove from seven feet at the last to post his 39th consecutive round of par or better, a streak dating back to the Tour Championship last August, with Straka hitting a 15-footer on his final hole to get a four-under 67 and come back within one .
Morikawa failed to get up and down before the 16th green and closed a three-under 68, bringing him down to 14 under, with Åberg three clear as he looks to build on his impressive debut at last week’s Masters.
Ireland’s Seamus Power is part of the group of four players sharing seventh place at minus-12, while Rory McIlroy heads into the final day six back after a minus-three 68 l brought him to 10 under and tied for 12th place.
