A man in his thirties was killed and several others injured in a shooting at a Turkish wedding in northeastern France, police said.
French media report that three armed, hooded men arrived at the reception venue in Thionville on Saturday evening before opening fire on the guests.
Citing police sources, the newspaper Le Figaro indicates that the attackers arrived at 1:15 a.m. local time to “settle scores between well-known gangs in Moselle”.
A pregnant woman was among the injured, police said, and three of the wounded were reported to be in critical condition at nearby Bel-Air Hospital.
Around 100 people were partying at the Eden Palace when the gunmen arrived in a 4×4 vehicle, according to French media, in the Lorraine region, near the borders of Germany and Luxembourg.
“At a quarter past one in the morning, a group of people went out to smoke in front of the village hall, then three heavily armed men opened fire in their direction,” a police source told AFP.
The men are believed to have used automatic weapons and shotguns.
In a statement, prosecutor Nancy François Capin-Dulhoste said the men fired “several dozen times,” adding that four people were hit by the bullets. The victims are believed to be aged between 25 and 50.
When help arrived, the attackers had already fled.
Local newspaper Le Républicain Lorrain reports that police are investigating whether the vehicle came from Germany or Luxembourg, about 15km away.
The Lorraine border region has often been the scene of violent incidents linked to drug trafficking.
According to Le Parisien, the dead and injured are known to the authorities for drug-related cases.
In May 2023, in the neighboring town of Villerupt, a shooting between rival gangs left five people injured.
