Barcelona are keen to reunite Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal at the Camp Nou next season after their impressive performances as Spain won Euro 2024.
Those two players were two of Spain’s standout performers during their triumphant campaign in Germany; Williams finished the tournament with two goals and an assist, while Yamal – who only turned 17 a day before the final – chipped in with a goal and four assists.
Athletic Bilbao are determined to keep the 22-year-old amid interest from Barca and other top European clubs.
However, his fee could be a problem for the Catalan club, as he has a buy-out clause estimated at £53 million (€63 million).
Bilbao have also proven they can compete with Spain’s top clubs in terms of wages, having recently tied down other Spain internationals to new contracts, such as goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Sky Sports News It was reported earlier this summer that Chelsea were among Williams’ admirers but were unlikely to pursue a transfer due to his high fee.
Williams repeatedly told reporters during the Euros that he did not want to talk about his future and those questions reportedly irritated Athletic Bilbao officials.
These questions were inevitable, however, given Williams’ explosion onto the European scene in Luis de la Fuente’s young team.
