Nelly Korda insists she gave little thought to the opportunity to make history by winning an unprecedented sixth straight event on the LPGA Tour.
The 25-year-old returns to action this week at the Cognizant Founders Cup in New Jersey after attending the Met Gala in New York on Monday, where she became the first golfer since Tiger Woods to attend the prestigious event.
Korda has described attending the Met Gala – where celebrities from sports, showbiz and fashion appear – as a “dream come true”, but continues to appear somewhat reluctant to be thrust into the spotlight as the face of golf feminine.
“I’m just doing what I love and hopefully that’s what makes the game grow naturally,” Korda told reporters Wednesday. “I’m not trying to push anything. I hope people see me for who I am and I love this game and I do it naturally.
“At the end of the day, I think if you do well in your sport, that’s what gets people’s attention. I’m not the type of person who tries to push anything or do anything which I’m not really comfortable with so I hope I just do it naturally and it gets people’s attention.”
Speaking about the experience, Korda added: “It was so, so crazy. You’re standing in line, ready to get on the mat and you feel like you’re seeing all these people that you usually watch on TV shows or movies and they’re like famous singers and you’re starstruck all the time.
“It’s the best people looking at me. I was silent looking at everyone’s dresses. I would say I saw Shakira and I love Shakira. She’s so beautiful. Then Jaden Smith was really, really nice .He was the first person to say hello and introduce yourself. Everyone was really amazing.
Can Korda make LPGA Tour history?
Korda won her second major title and fifth consecutive victory at the Chevron Championship last month, tying the record set by Nancy Lopez in 1978 and matched by Annika Sorenstam (2004-05).
When asked if she was confident of extending her winning streak this week, Korda replied: “If I’m honest, I haven’t thought about it at all because I’ve had so much going on these last two weeks Monday I had The Met so didn’t have too much time to think about it.
“My record hasn’t been the best in New Jersey. Last year I missed the cut and we played KPMG here last year too and that was a pretty missed cut too. I really try to continue one shot at a time, see how it goes.
“This golf course is difficult. It’s very, very narrow from the start. The rough is very punishing. And it’s wet this year, so it’s even worse. So just don’t go too far ahead and take it one shot at a time. As boring as it may sound or as many times as you hear me say it, that’s the motto and I’m going to stick to it.”
