If we thought last Monday was a bit quiet for betting purposes, wait until you hear the near-dead silence this time around.

The absence of MLB, WNBA or international soccer leaves us with a few darts, NBA Summer League and a little domestic soccer here and there, so proceed with the utmost caution.

World Matchplay Darts – Michael van Gerwen v Luke Littler

The third and final leg of the Triple Crown of Darts began last Saturday in Blackpool, England, and will continue until next weekend.

The main match, as we finish the first round on Monday, must be between second seed Michael van Gerwen of the Netherlands and England’s young darling Luke Littler, who shot to fame with his second-place finish at the World Championships last year.

The two have met nine times, with the Dutchman holding a 5-4 advantage, but 17-year-old phenom Littler is a -170 favorite for this matchup.

I don’t see any interest in Littler at these narrow odds, but I like the best-of-21 matchup to get closer to the distance.

NBA Summer League – Miami Heat vs Oklahoma City Thunder

The South Florida boys got their summer league campaign off to a strong start Saturday night, scoring 119 points in a 5-point win over the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics.

OKC was held to a miserable 69 points in a crushing defeat against the Raptors.

Miami was led by sophomore Jaime Jaquez, who scored 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting, along with 11 rebounds and five assists. Five of his teammates also finished in double figures, as the Heat shot 60 percent from three-point range.

I doubt they’ll shoot as well from three-point range again on Monday, but they should have enough points to cover the Thunder.

Swedish Championship Allsvenskan – Halmstad vs AIK Stockholm

I had a winning pick last week in the Swedish league, so let’s give that competition another try here.

Halmstad were beaten 5-1 by league leaders Malmö in their first game back after the league’s one-month break, but the score was one goal down until Malmö scored three times in the last 15 minutes, so that scoreline may be a little misleading. Halmstad, who sit 10th in the 16-team league, have only managed one shot on goal, however.

On Monday, AIK Stockholm, who are two places behind Halmstad in the standings, lost 2-1 in the return leg after the break at home to lowly Kalmar. IK have won only one of their last six league games and lost both of their friendlies in late June against Sparta Prague and Viking of Norway.

Given the way these two teams are playing right now, I think the value of this matchup lies in the draw, which was the result of the last meeting between these two teams in October 2023. Ten of the 36 all-time meetings between these two teams have also ended in draws.
