Kenya’s embattled president has announced a plan to form a new “broad-based government” after weeks of deadly anti-government protests sparked by an unpopular tax bill.
However, six of the 11 ministers proposed by President William Ruto in his speech on Friday were from the cabinet he sacked last week.
When dissolving the cabinet, Mr Ruto said the decision came after “thought and listening to Kenyans”.
On Friday, he said the “crisis” facing Kenya was less than the “opportunity” the country faced.
The protests began in response to taxes increase But after the government withdrew these proposals, the mostly young protesters broadened their demands.
Recently, they called for the resignation of President Ruto.
After Mr Ruto sacked his cabinet last Thursday, Kenya’s police chief resigned.
Human rights groups have accused police of shooting dozens of protesters, some fatally, and abducting or arbitrarily arresting hundreds more.
On Friday, Mr Ruto said the 11 ministers he had proposed constituted a “first batch” who would have to be approved by lawmakers in the National Assembly before being appointed.
