England captain Jos Buttler has promised a thorough review will take place after his side’s eventful T20 World Cup ended with a semi-final thrashing at the hands of India.
When England won the tournament in 2022, they beat the same opponents at the same stadium by 10 wickets in Adelaide, but this time the boot was on the other foot.
Chasing 172 on a tough batting pitch, Buttler’s side were bundled out for 103, crashing to a 68-run defeat to ensure they exit the Caribbean after a bitter defeat.
Their efforts in the tournament were at least an improvement on their previous title defense, a miserable 50-over World Cup campaign last year which saw them accumulate six defeats in nine matches, but there are still questions to answer.
While England proved far too strong for associate nations Oman, Namibia and the United States, they fared poorly against their more prestigious rivals, losing to Australia, South Africa and India during the tournament.
“We will look at everything and come up with a plan, absolutely,” Buttler told reporters after his team was eliminated from the World Cup.
“You need to review what we need to do best as a team, whether it’s our way of playing, our personnel, our style of cricket.
“After a loss like that, you’re willing to have a little bit of space to process it and process it so you can revisit not only that game but the last few months.
“I think there’s a lot of talent in English football. It’s up to us as a team and as a country in England to harness that talent, develop ourselves and make sure we can continue to have a good team going forward. There’s a while between now and the next few games so we’ll see what happens.
In the short term, Buttler will return home to spend time with his family, especially his third child, who arrived shortly before the tournament.
“To be honest, I’m just looking forward to getting away from the game,” he added.
“You can sit here and be emotional after a loss, but I don’t need to delve into that right now.
“I think reaching the semi-finals is an achievement, but we wanted to go all the way. This is why we came here. We played well enough to get to this point, but unfortunately we didn’t get there. »
