Jamie Chadwick says impressive recent results achieved by her and fellow Briton Abbi Pulling show that women are going “from strength to strength” in motorsport.
Chadwick became the first woman since 2010 to earn an Indy NXT podium by finishing third in the US series for Andretti Global on Friday.
“We’ve had really good speed this year, so we’ve always just tried to get results,” Chadwick said. Sky Sports News Wednesday.
“I made the transition to Indy NXT last year and now to go into the second season and get my first podium, that’s really what we’re aiming for and I’m very happy.”
Two days later, Pulling, championship leader in the all-female F1 Academy series, became the first female driver to achieve victory in a British Formula 4 race by triumphing at Brands Hatch.
“It’s fantastic, and obviously she’s also just had a great weekend at the F1 Academy,” Chadwick said.
“It’s great to see the success of a lot of other women in this sport. I think it just shows that we’re only growing in strength now and I think that’s really going to start to make a difference in the next few years .
Chadwick, who has been with the Williams F1 team as a development driver since 2019, dominated the all-female W Series with three successive titles before funding for the competition ran out in 2022.
Formula 1 has since created the F1 Academy, launching in 2023 with the aim of providing young female drivers with a pathway to the top of the sport.
Chadwick, who turns 26 next week, has chosen to continue his career in the United States, driving in the elite IndyCar relief series.
Having struggled to make an impact in his debut campaign in 2023, Chadwick is hoping a debut podium will provide a springboard to further success, including the chance to get the chance to test a Williams F1 car.
“Every driver wants to achieve results at the end of the day,” she said. “The first year was a little harder than I expected, but we worked really hard in the offseason, and I think to validate that and have the results finally come in, it means a lot and puts us in a good position for the rest of the year.
“I guess it’s a results-based business, so from my side, performance is everything and I guess that’s what I’ve really focused on.
“I obviously have a great relationship with Williams, I’ve been with them since 2019, so hopefully opportunities will present themselves at some point, but really I’m just focusing on myself and focusing on the doing the best job possible.”
“I’m obviously racing in America, where IndyCar is the pinnacle of racing there, so that’s something I’m aiming for. But I would love to have the opportunity to get into an F1 car at some point If a test becomes available, that’s definitely something I’m working on.”
