It’s the day India has been waiting for after more than six weeks of voting in the world’s largest democracy: the announcement of the results in a general election it will chart the country’s course for the next five years and probably well beyond.
Narendra Modi, India’s most powerful political figure in a generation, is seeking a third consecutive term as prime minister, which would make him only the second Indian leader to achieve that feat.
In the months leading up to the election, about three dozen opposition parties came together in a grand coalition, called the Indian National Alliance for Inclusive Development, or INDIA, in hopes of marshaling their votes. for a stronger fight against Mr Modi’s formidable Bharatiya Janata Party. or BJP, and its alliance, called the National Democratic Alliance, or NDA

Mr. Modi presented himself to voters as the man who would keep India going, both at home and abroad. His opponents have warned that his continued rule would put India’s democracy and secular foundations in critical danger.
As the results become known, Indians will closely examine the leanings of Mr. Modi’s BJP. In the previous elections, in 2019, the party won an overwhelming majority, securing 303 seats compared to just 52 for the main opposition party, Indian National. Congress.
To pose a serious challenge to Mr. Modi, the Congress party would need to significantly improve its performance in this election.
The BJP has set itself an even more ambitious target in the 2024 elections. But the newly united opposition coalition hoped to keep the BJP below its stated target of more than 400 seats in the lower house of Parliament, or even reduce its majority .
