World number 1 Iga Swiatek enjoyed a double bagel for breakfast in Paris, beating Anastasia Potapova 6-0 6-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open.
The three-time champion took the field an hour early, at 11 a.m. local time, as organizers tried to get the schedule back on track after all the rain delays.
And Swiatek only took 40 minutes, one of the shortest matches in the history of Roland Garros, to eliminate the Russian.
She made just two unforced errors compared to Potapova’s 19 and won 94 percent of the points on her first serve.
Of the 58 points played in the match, the 23-year-old Potapova won only 10.
“I was just really focused, in the zone and not really looking at the score, and yeah, it happened pretty fast, pretty weird,” Swiatek said.
“Because we played very early with the roof open, it’s still a little different but it’s still not too hot. It doesn’t feel like summer in Europe but we’ll see what it’s going to be like in two days .”
Potapova was playing the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career, but Swiatek took complete control of the game and gave her opponent no time to breathe between an avalanche of points.
Potapova attacked Swiatek’s serve on rare occasions to claim a few winners, but the Pole’s near-perfect shots left the Russian unanswered as the top seed wrapped up the first set in 19 minutes.
The crowd inside Court Philippe-Chatrier did their best to cheer Potapova on but Swiatek looked comfortable, forcing the Russian into several errors as the top seed consolidated her early lead.
Swiatek’s only problem was the swirling wind at the service, with the roof ultimately left open after several days of rain.
Swiatek finally put her former junior rival Potapova out of her misery, and the world number 41 stormed off the court. Swiatek to face Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the quarter-finals.
The 2019 Roland Garros finalist claimed a 6-4 6-2 fourth-round victory over Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic.
