Emma Raducanu’s clay-court form plunged at the Madrid Open on Wednesday as the Briton exited the tournament following a straight-sets first-round loss to world No. 82 Maria Lourdes Carle.
Raducanu came into the competition on a high having won four of her last five matches following excellent performances at the Billie Jean King Cup for Great Britain and the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
But the former US Open champion complained of “feeling tired” in the build-up to Madrid and went out at the first hurdle to beat Carle 6-2 6-2 at Pista Arantxa Sanchez.
With the victory, Carle became the first Argentine player to defeat a former women’s Grand Slam champion in singles since Nadia Podoroska beat Serena Williams in Rome three years ago.
