The Acolyte ends Tuesday night, in what creator Leslye Hedland hopes will be the first of many seasons to come. As the past month and changes have gone by, one part of the show has consistently stood out: its costumes. It’s always an area where Star Wars shone, but Acolyte The costumes stand out as the first show to take place in the High Republicwhich has included books and comics for five years.
The various costumes for the show were designed by Jennifer L. Bryanwhose previous credits include Break the bad And Stop and catch fire. In a new blog on Star Wars’ websiteShe explained her process of creating costumes for the actors in the series. In addition to drawing inspiration from previous Star Wars In addition to Trisha Biggar’s costumes used for the prequel, Bryan and his team also studied the clothing of real-world warriors. In the case of Osha, played by Amandla Stenberg, the character’s main outfit was a mix of a flight suit and mechanic’s overalls, and her color palette was inspired by what soldiers wore during the Vietnam War.
As for Osha’s sister, Mae, her design is inspired by the warrior tribes of East and North Africa, and various empires from Asian and European history. While Mae’s outfit is pieced together from what she’s found over the years, Bryan believes it “needed to look like it was pieced together from these different historical eras of warriors, but not specific to any one culture.” The bamboo stripes on her chest were inspired by samurai, while the chainmail on her arms and cape are inspired by Byzantine knights and Roman gladiators. Chainmail is not commonly seen in Star Wars, but she argued that it was “historically important” as a means of protection. Purple is her main color because it is a “color of memory” that reminds her of her family.
Some of the inspirations for their costumes will be obvious right away (of course course Qimir takes inspiration from Vader and Kylo Ren, while others are a bit more surprising. For example, Leia’s white dress inspired Indara’s ivory colors, and the layers of her costume were intentionally made with her action scenes in mind. This also applies to Qimir, whose fabrics and layers had to be “agile and very, very athletic.” According to Bryan, Qimir’s hand-carved cortosis gauntlet was particularly appreciated because it is “so original and so different from all the pieces that came with this piece.”
The Sidekick The season finale airs this Tuesday, July 16 on Disney+. While we’ve posted photos of the main cast, there’s plenty more on Bryan’s account Blogwho also looks at the costumes of characters like Sol, Mother Aniseya and Yor.
