Friday late afternoon, The New York Times launched a nuclear bomb from space during the presidential campaign of presumptive Democratic nominee and sitting president Joe Biden when his editorial board shockingly called for his withdrawal from the race.
It was a desperate and virtually unprecedented decision. After all, the Times is not just the newspaper of record, but a veritable mouthpiece for all things left, and it argues that Biden should not be president again.
Republicans can be excused a moment of schadenfreude over this, that’s for sure, but as a wise person once said, be careful what you wish for, because the Gray Lady may be right. In fact, it may be the only thing that can bring Donald Trump down.
NEW YORK TIMES EDITORIAL BOARD URGES BIDEN TO DROP
As the radioactive dust settles on Biden, giving arguably the worst debate in the history of the English language, Trump has never seemed more inevitable. The television diptych between his confidence and Biden’s confusion is set in stone.
The polls also look pretty good for Donald.
That’s why the Times decided to launch this unprecedented Hail Mary, even over objections posted on social media by Democratic heavyweights Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, to try to push President Biden off the ticket.
And there is reason to believe that such a plan could well work.
Of course, Democrats don’t have a pool of quality candidates to choose from. In fact, if Biden exits the scene from the right, the old party of Jefferson and Jackson will likely find itself stuck with Vice President Kamala Harris. But even that could be an improvement.
PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE BETWEEN BIDEN, TRUMP WAS AN UNPRECEDENTED FESTIVAL
While it is true that polls show that the vice president is one of the few people less popular than Biden, or cholera, for that matter, she is not collapsing physically and mentally, and the historic nature of a potential Harris candidacy could spice things up. A little.
There are undoubtedly millions of Democrats who would love nothing more than to rally around the flag of a woman of color fighting against what they see as the racist evil of Donald Trump.
And honestly, at this point, almost everyone would be more excited about left-leaning voters than watching Biden’s faculties and chances for a second term circle the exhaustion of old age and poor performance.

And there are other options. A Gavin Newsom or Gretchen Whitmer would look like young whippersnappers against Donald Trump—nearly as old as Biden—and even a dusted-off Andrew Cuomo could be forgiven for his COVID-related sins if it meant a chance to thwart Trump.
So yes, the Times editorial board is right. Replacing Biden is probably the Democrats’ best chance of keeping the White House, but there is a slight problem.
Since their defeat by Hillary Clinton in 2008, Democrats have been the party of Barack Obama, who is currently serving his third term in office. Any replacement is expected to continue that momentum.
So yes, the Times editorial board is right. Replacing Biden is probably the best chance Democrats have to keep the White House, but there is a slight problem.
That may be what Kamala Harris is willing to do, but the Newsoms, Whitmers, and Cuomos of this world have their own ideas, their own policy advisors and experts. In short, if one of them wins, Obama may well be forced to step down.
It won’t happen, at least not this time. The angry Obama cronies who watched Trump take over the White House eight years ago in the famous photograph won’t loosen their death grip on power.
So even if the Times is correct in its assessment that the best chance of preventing Trump’s return to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is to get new blood on the ticket, don’t hold your breath.
And that’s good news for Donald Trump and the GOP, right now Biden is quite possibly the weakest presidential candidate in 40 years and unlike Jimmy Carter, he’s also a ticking time bomb of decrepitude.

Does anyone really, truly believe that Grandpa Joe can go another 19 weeks without another “I fell down and I can’t get up” moment, two or ten?
Democrats today face two diverging roads, but even as the New York Times, which perhaps once had the power to effect such a switch, points to the road not taken, the well-trodden path of Joe Biden still seems like the most likely route.
The Democrats held no primaries and did not move any tires. Biden versus Trump is what they wanted, and now they’re getting it, good and hard.
