Apple Just Launched a version of his HomePod Mini smart speaker in a new “midnight” color. The dark color closely resembles the original space gray the Mini launched in, but the new name brings it in line with the midnight gray HomePod second generation which was released early last year. It will go on sale on July 17 in the United States (still for $99) and in 31 other countries.
The HomePod Mini initially only launched in two colors — space gray and white — but Apple later added yellow, orange, and blue. Apple says the new Mini is made from 100% recycled mesh. Until now, the smart speaker’s mesh was made from 90% recycled materials.
The price, features and overall appearance of the new Mini seem to remain the same. It still comes with Siri and can detect temperature and humidityYou can use it as an intercom when you have multiple Siri-enabled speakers, and it can detect when a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm goes off and alert you via your iPhone.
…The color of Apple’s press photo also looks almost the same. Was it worth devoting an entire press release to? Sure. I have to remind people that Apple also makes smart speakers. Will I buy one just to put it next to a space gray one and ask my family which one is which? I hate to say it, but there’s a good chance I will.
Anyway, the new one is on the left.
