Chicago White Sox outfielder Tommy Pham had a rough time during the team’s 6-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday afternoon.
In the top of the eighth inning, Chicago had runners on second and third with one out when a fly ball was hit to left field. It didn’t go very far, but it didn’t stop the White Sox third base coach to send Pham on a spotting play to see if they could tie the game.
Pham was downed from a mile away as William Contreras tagged him as he slid in to end the inning. It was a huge moment in the game, and Contreras’ emotions led him to yell something at Pham, who clearly didn’t like what was said.

Pham turned around as he returned to his dugout, and coaches and players had to stop him from charging the Brewers. Even White Sox announcer John Schriffen was warming up in the booth.
“Contreras barks at him. Tommy Pham barks back!” Schriffen shouted into his helmet. “He’s not backing down, he doesn’t like it and now home plate umpire Edwin Jimenez has to hold Pham. No, we won’t take that. We won’t take that from the Brewers!”

During his postgame locker room interview, Pham had some fighting words for Milwaukee and the rest of MLB if they started something with him on the field.
βOne-run ball game, close game at the plate,β Pham said when asked to explain what happened. “Actually, it wasn’t even close. It was a shallow ball to left field; you’d expect the left fielder to throw out the baserunner on that play.”
“The third base coach sends you out, you gotta go. I’m stuck at home a mile away. I go to the dugout and I hear, ‘Tough guy,’ with all that bullshit – –.I’ll never start anything, but I’ll be ready to finish it. There’s a reason I do all kinds of fights in the offseason because I’m ready to fuck someone. take as is.
Pham, 36, joined the White Sox this season but started the year in Triple-A. He was called up to the team in late April when the team had an abysmal 3-22 record, and after Sunday’s loss they still own the worst record in the league at 15-45.
Pham, who played for the National League-winning Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets last season, has done well since being called up. He’s hitting .287/.333/.411 with three home runs, seven doubles and 12 RBIs in 32 games Sunday. He finished 0 for 3 with one walk in this game.
It’s been a struggle for Chicago all year, and we’re not even at the All-Star break yet. But Pham makes it clear that no matter what the record says, he’s fighting to stand his ground.
