By Greg Lukianoff and Andrea Lan:
At the extremes, 57% of very liberal students in our study reported feeling poor mental health at least half the time, compared to just 34% of very conservative students. Let him understand. 34% is really pretty bad, but 57% is close to a figure of 2 out of 3 very liberal students.
The graph above shows that the further left students move, the more likely they are to have poor mental health, suggesting that it is not just liberal ideology that impacts mental health , but also the extreme of their beliefs. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests show that ideology is a statistically significant predictor of mental health. Post-hoc tests demonstrate that it predicts in the indicated direction: more liberal and poorer mental health. The data so far is consistent with the findings of other researchers (Zach Goldberg and Jon Haidt using Pew Research data, and Gimbrone et al.) and supports the hypothesis that “social justice fundamentalism” can contribute negatively to people’s mental health. those who adopt it.
Via the excellent Arnold Kling. I’ve been in this movement for a while, it’s one of the most important truths for understanding current American political discourse. I insist, however, that in this context, the word “liberal” is particularly inappropriate.
