As the defense chiefs of the United States and China meet in Singapore, attention turns to growing tensions over the future of Taiwan.
Defense chiefs from across the Asia-Pacific region are in Singapore to discuss security challenges facing the region.
The three-day summit, known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, attracts high-level ministers, military leaders and global security analysts.
The focus will be on foreign policy, with sensitive diplomatic negotiations taking place behind closed doors.
But relations are already frosty between the two world superpowers: China and the United States. Beijing warned Washington against interfering in its affairs after their defense ministers met to discuss Taiwan.
Although this relationship shows no signs of thawing, others are trying to find common ground.
So what alliances could be strengthened and new ones established?
And how does all this affect the balance of power in the world?
