A small business owner and former city councilor won a close primary and is now tasked with flipping one of the bluest districts in Texas. for the RepublicansAssociated Press projects.
Republican Darrell Day, who served on the Arlington City Council and founded an executive search firm, defeated his opponent, former Southern Methodist University Football player David Blewett during Tuesday’s Republican primary runoff for the state’s 32nd Congressional District.
Day will now face Democrat Julie Johnson, a member of the Texas House of Representatives, in the November general election. The winner will replace Democratic Rep. Colin Allred, who is running for U.S. Senate.
The Republican fight to flip the district will be tough given that it encompasses heavily urban areas to the north and east of downtown Dallas. The district was redrawn following the 2020 census, adding areas more solidly leaning Democratic.
If Day wins the race, his victory would mark a historic victory for the underdogs.
