Cole Palmer and Mauricio Pochettino have both reiterated that the Chelsea midfielder is the team’s penalty taker after a “silly” row with Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke.
Chelsea were leading 4-0 when they were awarded a penalty, awarded after Abdoulaye Doucouré’s clip on Palmer in the box.
The Blues midfielder had already scored a hat-trick in the first half as Chelsea beat Everton 6-0and as the second-half penalty was awarded, Madueke and Jackson claimed the spot-kick for themselves.
Thiago Silva came on to ease tensions and Madueke looked set to win the argument, before Palmer stepped in to take the ball back from his teammate.
Chelsea captain Conor Gallagher also had his say to support Palmer’s claims, with Jackson subsequently returning to the group. As Palmer prepared to lay the ball down, there was shoving between players and clear arguments, but Palmer ultimately took – and scored – the kick.
It was an embarrassing incident in what was one of Chelsea’s best performances of the season, which Aerial sports Expert Jamie Carragher calls it ‘idiotic’ Monday Night Football.
Pochettino: We must think collectively
In his post-match interviews, Pochettino apologized to Chelsea fans for his players’ behavior. He added that such an incident would not happen again, encouraging his players to think collectively.
He said: “It’s a shame. We can’t behave like this, I told them ‘this is the last time of this behavior’.
“It is impossible to have this type of behavior after this performance. If we want to be a great team, we have to change and think collectively.
“It’s a process for a young team that needs to learn a lot. I was talking to the players about it after the match. This is the last time I want to see something like this. I want to apologize to supporters.
“We need to be clear the next time this happens. They need to learn and be professional. We need to focus on the collective. They knew it was Cole. Cole is the taker. This is a clear example that it is a process we still need to learn.”
Asked if there would be any punishment for Madueke and Jackson, and if they would apologise, Pochettino added: “No (there will be no punishment). It’s about learning They are young people.
“Remember Burnley? Nobody wanted to take him and he (Palmer) showed his personality… The discipline is going to be stronger. If they behave like children? Here, it’s impossible. It’s a shameful and unacceptable thing.
“I think we all agree that this behavior cannot happen again and that they were wrong… We are like a school now to show that they were wrong and that they need to learn “If they don’t learn afterwards, we will make certain decisions. Now it’s about learning and using this type of experience to move forward and be better.”
Palmer: I am the penalty taker and I wanted to take it
Palmer added to an already exemplary first season with Chelsea with a perfect hat-trick and the penalty at Stamford Bridge.
He admitted the argument may have been taken a little too far, but added there was no bad blood between the players.
“Other players wanted to take it, which is understandable because it’s 4-0,” he said. Aerial sports. “But it was me who took the penalty and I wanted to take it, so in the end I took it.
“We’re trying to show that everyone wants to take responsibility, maybe it was a little over the top with the argument and all that, but everyone wants to help. It wasn’t anything serious, we were laughing about it and were joking. The gaffer told us now.”
Carragher surprised by Pochettino’s reaction
After both interviews, Carragher said he was surprised that Pochettino was as vocal about the row as he was, explaining: “I didn’t expect that from Pochettino.
“When the players were interviewed, they tried to downplay the situation. I thought it might be that everyone was sitting in the dressing room and the coach was giving the players a message about what they said and downplayed it after a great victory.
“It was really interesting to see how upset Pochettino was and how angry he was about this situation.
“He considers it the best night for his team and for him as Chelsea manager, but people are going to talk about this situation.
“I was surprised by his reaction, but also happy because it sends a very strong message to the players. I don’t think it will happen again.”
Dele: The players showed their age
Everton midfielder Dele has joined Carragher Monday Night Football, and said Jackson and Madueke showed flashes of their inexperience at 22.
“For me it’s the players showing their age,” he said.
“Pochettino will be very disappointed. The most important thing about him is that he cares so much about you as a person and for players to show that kind of thing, it’s selfish.
“It’s good to see your attackers want to score, but if you’re not the penalty taker you’re not trying to win the ball back. They’re young so as long as they learn from it.
“It’s a shame because they had an incredible night. It’s a shame because that’s what people will be talking about, rather than their incredible performance.”
