Former Premier League footballer Troy Deeney dislocated two joints and suffered ligament damage to his hand after boxing training, preventing him from taking part in the UK Open Pool Championship in Telford this week.

Troy Deeney withdraws from UK Open Pool Championship due to injury sustained during boxing training
Former Premier League footballer Troy Deeney was forced to withdraw from the British Open Pool Championship at the last minute due to an injury suffered during boxing training.
Deeney was due to play two matches, including a first-round clash against world number 31 Marc Bijsterbosch, but the former Watford striker dislocated two joints and suffered ligament damage to his hand after boxing training which left him prevented from participating in the event in Telford.
Deeney played for Forest Green Rovers in League Two last season, later taking on a player/manager role
“Really gutted to have had to withdraw from today’s BetVictor UK Open Pool Championship,” said the 35-year-old.
“A visit to the emergency room this morning revealed that I had two dislocated joints and ligament damage in my hand from boxing training before the event.
“I’m really very frustrated as I was really looking forward to going today. A huge thank you to the World Nineball Tour and CueTec for their support in my preparation and I wish everyone the best of luck for the tournament I I’m sure it will be a huge success.”
Deeney had accepted a wildcard into the event after being approached by World Nineball Tour promoters to become involved in the 256-player invitational event at the Telford International Centre.
The former Forest Green Rovers manager is not the only sportsman switching to snooker for the tournament, with World Snooker Championship semi-finalist Stuart Bingham also expected to take part.
Former snooker world champion Bingham takes on Frazer Patrick, while Tyson Fury’s boxing brother Roman Fury takes on Ahmed Taufiq.
The World Nineball Tour’s first professional pool player, Pia Filler, takes on Preecha Boonmoung of Thailand.
