“We are working to hire a lawyer, but it has been a little difficult with the prices,” he said.
Representative Lauren BoebertTyler’s teenage son, Tyler, told the court Thursday that he was having trouble finding a lawyer to represent him.
Tyler Boebert, 18, was arrested by rifle police department in February after a “series of vehicle break-ins and property thefts” in Rifle, Colorado. He initially faced 22 charges, including several felony charges for criminal possession of identification documents. Eight charges have since been dropped.
“We’re working on hiring an attorney, but it’s been a little difficult with the prices, but we’re working on it,” Tyler Boebert said in Garfield County Court Thursday.
“Worst case scenario, if we can’t come to a solution with the attorney, then I’m going to go to a public defender or whatever works best for me,” he continued.
He added that his lawyers advised him to “go to court today to understand what’s going on before we settle anything.”
Ninth Judicial District Judge John Neiley told Tyler Boebert he has time to decide whether he wants to hire a private attorney or seek a public defender.
“I still think it’s a good idea to do both because if you qualify, you have options, and options are always good,” Judge said. “But we can give this some time so you can make that decision.”
Tyle Boebert’s next court date has been set for May 9.
Representatives for Lauren Boebert did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
Tyler Boebert’s legal troubles come at a difficult time for his politician mother, who is facing an intense re-election campaign. The teenager too I became a father last year after getting his girlfriend pregnant.
According to Lauren Boebert finalized his divorce of her ex-husband, Jayson Boebertin October, she said in December that she would be change congressional districtmoving from the state’s 3rd Congressional District to the more conservative 4th District.
The district change did not give Lauren Boebert much leverage in the election. The Denver Post reported in January that she came in fifth among fellow GOP candidates for the 4th District in a poll of just over 100 Republicans.
“I love my son Tyler, who has gone through some very difficult public challenges for a young man and been the subject of attention he did not ask for,” Lauren Boebert said of her son in February.
“As an adult and a father, Tyler will take responsibility for his actions and should be held accountable for bad decisions, just like any other citizen,” she continued.
According to an arrest affidavit viewed by BI, Tyler Boebert is one of four people accused of burglarizing four cars in Rifle and steal wallets to make purchases at businesses such as McDonald’s, Starbucks and gas stations.
A woman who reported her wallet stolen as part of a string of thefts that led to the arrest of Tyler Boebert. told investigators she had a brain tumor and would no longer be able to pay for the surgery, according to court documents.
