Benjamin Nathans, To the success of our desperate cause: the many lives of the Soviet dissident movement. The definitive book on this subject, consisting largely of profiles of dissidents. The title is taken from a long-standing dissident toast, and yet they ultimately won, sort of. So your cause is not hopeless either.
Scott Hodge, Taxocracy: What you don’t know about taxes and how they govern your daily life. An excellent little book on the power of tax incentives, written by the former director of the National Tax Foundation. Incentives matter!
Alex Christofi wrote Cypria: a journey to the heart of the MediterraneanThis is the book I will take to Cyprus when I go there.
Randy Barnett, A Life for Liberty: The Making of an American Originalistis a well-written 616-page memoir from a prominent libertarian legal theorist.
Gregory Makoff, Default: the historic legal battle over the restructuring of Argentina’s $100 billion debt. It is both a good book on how the law handles sovereign defaults and useful context on what Milei is trying to undo in Argentina.
I also read a series of books on the history of the transgender movement. I don’t have a single must-read book to recommend, but you might start with Weininger and Magnus Hirschfeld, who are also interesting representatives of early 20th century Austro-Hungarian and Germanic culture. Overall, I’m surprised how many key books are out of print and sold second hand. high prices on Amazon.
