CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — Charlotte, North Carolina, residents who live just doors from the scene of Monday’s deadly shooting are in shock after gunfire erupted in their quiet neighborhood Monday afternoon.
The shooting began around 1:30 p.m. Monday when members of a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were executing an arrest warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Hours and dozens of gunshots later, authorities confirmed that three task force members and a CMPD officer were fatally shot while four other officers were injured.
“There was a lot of gunshots and people in our yard and people hiding behind vehicles. Firefighters were hiding behind fire trucks. It was wild,” a neighbor told Fox News Digital. wished to be identified only as Sarah.
Sarah said she and her husband heard more than 50 gunshots in the middle of an otherwise normal day.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings confirmed during a press briefing Monday that the suspect police were executing the arrest warrant against and who fired the first shots at the officers was ” died in the front yard at the end of all the gunfire.”
The police believe two other persons of interest, who were taken to the police station for further investigation, may have been involved in the shooting. One of the persons of interest is a 17-year-old, police said. The other is a woman.

“I was in shock,” Sarah said. “It’s really tragic. These people work every day to protect us, and I don’t think there’s a time when they’re serving a federal mandate that’s just status quo, but I don’t think we can expect something like this to happen… it’s just crazy.”

The shooting happened in the 5000 block of Galway Drive, which was cordoned off by police for most of the day.
Another neighbor named Jordan told Fox News Digital that he saw a police officer come out during the shooting and vomit. He also saw a white man who appeared deceased and covered in blood being transported in a SWAT vehicle.
“It’s a pretty safe neighborhood. Lots of families.”

A third neighbor who spoke with Fox News Digital on condition of anonymity said the house where the shooting took place was generally quiet. She also saw authorities carry a bloodied man into a vehicle during the shooting.

“I can’t say if it was the officer or a marshal, but I saw one of them get into the truck but he was covered in blood,” she said, adding: He was wearing normal clothes. He didn’t have one of the uniforms (on).”
In total, eight law enforcement officers were shot dead. Three officers from the US Marshals Task Force – a deputy and two task force officers – were killed. A Charlotte police officer was killed after succumbing to serious injuries later Monday, and four others were injured after being shot, including a U.S. Marshals Task Force officer.
CMPD identified the Charlotte officer who died Monday as Joshua Eyer, a six-year veteran of the force.
Jennings called the incident “the most tragic I’ve been involved in.”

“I have been with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for 32 years. I cannot recall an incident where three law enforcement officers were (injured) and three others were killed in the same incident , as well as one in critical condition and others who suffered gunshot wounds,” he said.
One CMPD officer remains in critical condition.

“Today is a tragic day in Charlotte.
