A major earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude struck Chile on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The earthquake occurred at 9:50 p.m. Chile time about 45 kilometers southeast of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, according to agency data.
Seismologists may revise the magnitude of the quake as they review available data. Additional information gathered about the quake may also prompt USGS scientists to update the shaking severity map.
Aftershocks in the region
An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that follows a larger earthquake in the same area. Aftershocks are usually minor changes along the portion of a fault that slipped at the time of the initial earthquake.
Aftershocks can occur days, weeks, or even years after the initial earthquake. These events can be of equal or greater magnitude than the initial earthquake and can continue to affect areas that have already been damaged.
