Top 5 TV Deals
Hisense’s mid-range U7N follows up one of my favorite mid-range models from last year, the U7K, with even more flash to show for it. Its mini LED panel delivers brilliant HDR brightness and, just as importantly, excellent contrast and black levels for impressive control in both dark and bright scenes in any environment. You’ll also get vibrant quantum dot colors and excellent gaming features, plus a 120Hz panel for smooth gaming at top speeds. There are a few downsides to a TV at this price, like poor viewing angles and mediocre motion handling, but good luck finding a TV that tops all that videophile generosity at such a low price. The U7N adds great usability with its Google TV interface and features like an adjustable optical audio output, which lets you use your TV remote to control the volume output of older audio devices. At well under $1,000 for a 65-inch model, this great deal just got a great deal.
If you’re looking for an upgraded version of the U7N, Hisense’s flagship model, the U8N (8/10, WIRED recommends) is the brightest TV we’ve ever tested. I’m talking about break out the sunglasses, open all the blinds in broad daylight, thanks to its ultra-powerful mini LED panel. That’s all well and good, but what really makes this TV a ringer is that it pairs that brightness with fantastic black levels and contrast, with almost no visible blooming around bright objects, and big quantum dot colors. You’ll also get a 120Hz panel and top-notch gaming features for the fastest action, an intuitive Google TV interface, and a host of other features. It does have a few flaws, like off-axis viewing and average motion handling, but at this price, it’s hard to say no to one of our favorite TVs of the year so far.
TCL 2023 Q7 (8/10, WIRED recommends) is one of our favorite affordable TVs, offering a stunning mix of bright, colorful picture performance and a host of features for the price. Its sparkling screen is armed quantum dots for expansive colors and a 120Hz refresh rate for sports and gaming. Modern gaming features like VRR (variable refresh rate) allow the TV to sync perfectly with high-frame-rate games for smooth, tear-free performance. Unlike some competitors, the Q7 doesn’t offer mini LED for high-end contrast control, but its hundreds of dimming zones and solid picture processing combine for deep black levels and good contrast. Whether you’re gaming in a sunny room or watching a dark movie in the dark, this TV is up to the challenge while keeping your budget in check.
LG C3 TV (9/10, WIRED recommends) is once again my top contender for best value. As one of the best TVs we reviewed last year, this stunning OLED offers a stunning blend of flashy brightness, vivid clarity, and lifelike colors to put the “wow” factor in everything you watch. Even though it’s LG’s bottom-of-the-line model, the C3 is packed with premium features, including a quad-pack of HDMI 2.1 ports with the best gaming tech, LG’s fast (if sometimes crunchy) webOS interface, and a sleek but understated design. The C3 isn’t as flashy as LG’s G-series flagship, but it offers most of the best of the high-end offerings at a more affordable price. That means there’s more money left over for a great TV. sound baror better yet a nice pair of bookshelf speakers. What? You thought I was going to recommend a mutual fund or something?
Roku’s budget-friendly Plus Series QLED TV has a lot going for it, but its best feature is the Roku-based operating system that runs the show. Roku makes everything from setup to finding your favorite streaming apps to even summoning the remote from under the dog bowl a breeze. (How did it get there?) The Plus Series offers good brightness, solid contrast, and wide quantum dot colors, all at a surprisingly low entry price. The TV’s biggest drawbacks are its 60Hz panel and lack of advanced gaming features, making it better suited to those who primarily watch TV and movies. If you want a performance upgrade, Roku sells the Pro Series (also on sale)which offers gaming extras and better overall performance. Otherwise, the Plus series is an ideal choice for TV newbies looking to get into the world of 4K HDR without spending a dime.
Samsung’s long-awaited return to OLED TVs has been a boon to the industry, with the bold and beautiful S95 QD-OLED series. It turns out that adding the colorful sparkle of quantum dot technology to OLED’s glorious contrast and perfect black levels was a very good idea. The S95C is the second edition of Samsung’s new venture into OLED, and it’s a flagship worth celebrating. You’ll get fantastic brightness and color, glorious contrast, wide viewing angles, and top-notch motion handling from the TV’s 120Hz panel. Like all Samsung TVs, it omits Dolby Vision HDR, and I don’t love its Tizen smart system, but those are the only notable downsides. Aside from the fantastic picture, you’ll get near-full gaming features in Samsung’s Gaming Hub, a solar-powered remote, and a sleek, versatile design. While the latest The S95D is brighterIt’s more expensive right now and has a new type of anti-glare screen that has its own quirks. If you’re looking for one of the best TVs you can buy, the S95C is a great choice at a great price.
