George Russell edged Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton and McLaren’s Lando Norris for pole position for the British GP as the race’s three local drivers fought an intense battle to take the lead of the Silverstone grid on Sunday.
For the first time at Silverstone, and the first time in F1 since 1968, the top three positions on Sunday’s grid will be occupied by a trio of British drivers.
On a difficult and disappointing day, Red Bull world championship leader Max Verstappen qualified only fourth after suffering floor damage to his car following a mistake at Copse corner in intermittent rain in Q1.
Team-mate Sergio Perez’s recent woes had already worsened by that point after he spun at the same corner and qualified on the back row in 19th.
As the Mercedes drivers battled against an in-form Norris, it was Russell who eventually came out on top at the end of Q3 for his second pole position in the last four races, denying Hamilton a record-breaking eighth pole at Silverstone.
Oscar Piastri finished fifth in the second McLaren, while Nico Hulkenberg impressed again in qualifying to take sixth, ahead of the two Ferraris.
Carlos Sainz finished only seventh while Charles Leclerc failed to qualify for Q3 and will start 11th.
