Manny Machado’s two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night lifted the San Diego Padres to a 10-8 victory over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.
Arizona overcame a 7-2 deficit in the top of the ninth inning. Alek Thomas hit a grand slam off catcher Robert Suarez with one out to bring the team within one run. After Corbin Carroll hit a two-out double, pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk hit a two-run home run to give the team a one-run lead.
But Diamondbacks slugger Paul Sewald (0-2) couldn’t even get an out in the bottom of the inning. Jurickson Profar led off the inning with a tying home run to right field, his 13th of the season. After Jake Cronenworth drew a walk, Machado hit his 12th home run into the left-center field bleachers.
Stephen Kolek (3-0) made the final out in the top of the ninth inning to earn the win as San Diego won for the 12th time in 15 games before a record crowd of 47,171 at Petco Park.
San Diego took the lead in a four-run fourth inning. Jackson Merrill made it 3-2 with a two-run triple to the right-field corner that scored Cronenworth and Machado.
David Peralta followed with an RBI double down the right-field line that scored Merrill, then scored when Kyle Higashioka hit a two-out single to left.
Higashioka made it 7-2 in the sixth inning when he hit a two-run home run to left-center field off reliever Joe Jacques.
Merrill scored the Padres’ first run in the second inning on an infield groundout that allowed Machado to score, who led off with a double and reached third base on an infield groundout by Donovan Solano.
Arizona started scoring early in the game. Carroll led off with a double and trotted home one out later when Joc Pederson hit a two-run home run to center field, his 13th of the season.
Neither starter was involved in the decision. Slade Cecconi worked 4 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks, allowing eight hits and five runs with a walk and two strikeouts.
San Diego’s Randy Vasquez pitched 6 1/3 innings, scattering six hits and allowing two runs. He walked one and struck out six.
