Britain is vote in general legislative elections This could fundamentally realign its politics. Fourteen years after coming to government and five years after a landslide victory under Boris Johnson, the centre-right Conservatives are fighting to retain constituencies they have held for decades.
Polls suggest a return to power for the centre-left Labour Party, whose promises include ending tax breaks for private schools and transferring most rail companies into the public sector.
But while some forecasts suggest a landslide majority for Labour, a two-party race is increasingly far away. In addition to the centrist Liberal Democrats, the Greens and the pro-independence parties in Scotland and Wales, the far-right Reform UK and pro-Palestinian candidates to the left of Labour are also hoping to win seats.
Voting changes since 2019
The arrows indicate the increase or decrease in each party’s vote share compared to the last general election.
The New York Times will be watching both whether Labor’s results match the magnitude of predictions and for signs of further realignment to come.
