Even before its casting has been officially revealed, the next Marvel Studios Fantastic Four movie was always on the verge of becoming a big problem. Marvel Comics’ First Family Hasn’t Had a Movie Since Fantastic4stic nearly a decade ago (despite Fox’s best attempts), and we’re also approaching 20 years since the studios’ previous attempt with the 2000s films. These two films occupy an interesting place in the canon of super films. -hero, especially since their Johnny Storm was Chris Evans, who became Captain America for almost a decade.
Talk to Weekly Entertainment, Joseph Quinn was asked whether a previous version of Johnny influenced his approach to the character. Although he was a fan of Evans’ portrait at the time, he was mainly concerned with “making it his own.” There are definitely “big boots to fill,” but he says discussions with director Matt Shakman made it clear that this film wouldn’t be in conversation with past releases the way the MCU Spider-Man films are with their past cinematographic. “There are aspects that are truly unique and unique to him. (…) I’m really looking forward to establishing this family dynamic with (my teammates) and with the guidance of Matt Shakman.
From stars to Shakman to writers Jeff Kaplan, Ian Springer and Eric Pearson, everyone involved wants to “get (Fantastic Four) that’s true,” Quinn continued. According to him, this new film will be different from previous Marvel films in ways he clearly can’t explain. But he hoped the end result would be a film that would both do some good for the Four and also convert everyone who has suffered from understandable superhero movie burnout in recent years.
As for fatigue, Quinn noted that superhero movies need to put people before punches and explosions, that’s not why people see them in the first place. It’s something Fantastic Four aims to deliver on its promises, and something that resembles the central philosophy of the entire film: “We’re not just in on a dime,” he said, “we’re in for a pound with this one.” We’re going to go there.
Fantastic Four arrives in theaters on July 25, 2025, but Quinn can be seen next in A quiet place: first day on June 7.
