Nelly Korda won her second major title and a remarkable fifth straight tournament victory by winning the Chevron Championship by two strokes.
The world number one’s victory at The Woodlands in Texas allowed her to tie the record for most consecutive victories on the LPGA, tying Nancy Lopez’s mark set in 1978 and that of Annika Sorenstam in 2004-05 .
Korda started the final round of this year’s first major behind South Korean leader Haeran Ryu, but a three-under final round 69 was enough to give the 25-year-old American a 13-under victory. tournament.
Swede Maja Stark finished two shots further back in second after also closing with a 69, while American Lauren Coughlin and Canadian Brooke Henderson – who started tied with Korda after a super third round of 64 – were tied for third place at 10 under. Ryu scored a two-over 74 to finish fifth.
Asked how she managed to string together five wins in five straight tournaments, Korda, who made five birdies but made two bogeys on the back nine of her final round, replied: “I don’t know, but I can finally breathe now.
“That last nine felt like the longest back nine of my life. It was a little tough on the back nine, but I’m happy to get the win.
“I was really starting to feel it on the back nine, just the nerves setting in. It’s a major. It’s everything I ever wanted as a little girl.
“I can finally breathe now and enjoy the moment because I was really, really nervous. My stomach hurts.”
Korda’s first major victory came at the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship and she won the first of her five consecutive titles this year at the LPGA Drive On Championship in January.
She then took a seven-week break before returning to win three events in the space of three weeks, including beating Ireland’s Leona Maguire in the final of the T-Mobile Match Play a fortnight ago.
In terms of British interest in the tournament, 20-year-old Lottie Woad – winner of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur earlier this month – failed to finish among the lowest amateurs. The future English star, who was in contention at four under until Friday, ultimately finished at one under after a final round two-over 74.
Charley Hull and Georgia Hall both signed on with 72 to also finish one under, while Jodi Ewart Shadoff (+3) and Scotland’s Gemma Dryburgh (+4) had disastrous final rounds of 79 and 80, respectively. Northern Ireland’s Stephanie Meadow finished the week tied.
