A major earthquake measuring 7.2 magnitude struck the South Pacific Ocean off the coast of Peru on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake occurred at 12:36 a.m. Peru time, about 5 miles west of Atiquipa, Peru, according to agency data.
As seismologists review the available data, they may revise the reported magnitude of the earthquake. Additional information gathered about the earthquake may also prompt USGS scientists to update the shaking severity map.
Aftershocks in the region
An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that follows a larger earthquake in the same area. Aftershocks are usually minor changes along the part of a fault that slipped at the time of the initial earthquake.
Aftershocks can occur days, weeks, or even years after the first earthquake. These events may be of equal or greater magnitude than the initial earthquake and may continue to affect already damaged areas.
